After 40 years sleeping Arenal Volcano woke up in 1968 with a huge eruption that lasted for days, killing 87 people and burying 3 villages. It has since been much friendlier providing a spectacular display of steam, rumbling and lava. Arenal Volcano is without a doubt one of the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica.The Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort is a five-star resort located at the foot of Arenal Volcano, where you can sooth away your cares in the volcano heated mineral waters. The resort offers a number of packages for visitors and is a great experience.
If you always wanted to see a active volcano, Arenal is what you are looking for. Perfectly conical, Arenal is perfectly picturesque whether you see it for the first time looming over the hamlet of La Fortuna, or, approaching from the opposite direction, reflected in the sparkling waters of Lake Arenal. Your best chance to get a good look at the volcano spewing smoke and ash is in the early morning hours before the clouds roll in. Then, soak your weary soul in natural hot springs amid paradisaic gardens at Tabacon. This is high on our list of recommended places to see for our own friends and family.
From San Jose it is an 80 mile drive that takes about 3.5 hours. This is a beautiful scenic drive through mountainous roads!
Any time of the year. This area is always beautiful and there is a lot to do: hot springs, canopy, sky trek, ATV, hiking, horse riding, fishing, windsurfing, etc. The evergreen environment is so pleasant that you can spend all your time in this place and you will not be disappointed. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes due to weather conditions; the crater will be clouded. We recommend at least staying for a minimum of two nights in the area.
Insider Tip: the Volcano is usually viewable in the early morning hours - set your alarm clock for 4 or 5 am and you will probably get a glimpse.
