Summary:

Known as Las Tres Marías (the three Marias) due to it's distinctive 3 peaks, Costa Rica volcano Barva, which can be seen from almost any part of the Central Valley, is the highest point of Braulio Carrillo National Park. Its crater is filled by a beautiful lagoon.


At 9,500 feet above sea level, Barvas exuberant crater lakes are the attraction for many who decide to take this 3 hours hike. Barva volcano is accessible only by foot and is the only part of the park where camping is allowed.

Thankfully Barva volcano has been dormant for the past 400 years (and we all hope it will stay that way. Besides its luxuriant cloud forest, coffee plantations of the highest quality can be found all around the slopes of this beautiful volcano.

Start from the city of Heredia and drive to the town of Barva. From there follow the signs to Sacramento where the ranger station is located. From there you start hiking.

The park is open Tuesday to Sunday from 7 am to 4 pm. Entrance fee is US$ 7. It is recommended to start early since clouds cover the summit later on. If you visit during rainy season, May to November, it is better to take rain coats and at least a warm jacket.
