Bolaños Island is an important conservation seabird sanctuary for the nesting of brown pelicans and the very particular Magnificent Frigate bird. Other types of birds that also nest here are the American Oystercatcher, magpie jays, black vultures, and several species of bats.

The 25 hectares island has a white, sandy beach at the eastern tip of the island with mounds of seashells and clams. At low tide it’s possible to walk round the island and gives visitors a chance to glance at several species of crab that live and mate here, specially the large sized land crab.

Drive to La Cruz, Guanacaste taking highway # 1. From La Cruz follow the signs to Puerto Soley, located in Salinas Bay. The island is accessible only by boat from Puerto Soley at 3-km. or from Descartes Point at 1.5 km from the island.
