Located at the extreme southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Cabo Blanco became the first protected area thanks to the effort of Swede visionary Nicolas Wessberg. The beauty of this reserve is achieved by the combination of tropical climate and geographical location of the 1,172 hectares of mixed mostly tropical forest.
Fauna and flora are abundant and varied: White-tailed deer, pacas, armadillos, anteaters, howler, spider and white-faced monkeys, collared peccary, coyotes, porcupines, raccoons and coatis, ocelots, jaguarondis or margay cats. Approximately 150 trees have been identified where evergreen species predominate, but dry forest species are found as well.
Right in front lies the Cabo Blanco Island, known as the "White Cape" from the Conquest time because of encrusted guano covering the rocks in dry season. Brown pelicans, frigate birds, laughing gulls and the largest community of brown boobies inhabit this island.
