The Cahuita National Park has an extension of 2,732 terrestrial acres and 55,200 marine acres. The park protects beaches and lowlands of the southern Caribbean coastal region of Costa Rica. Scuba and snorkeling are allowed in the protected marine area, which contains a coral reef and associated sea life. The southern beach is a known nesting ground for several varieties of sea turtle.
Many coral and fish species are found in the waters. Lobster, white shrimp, crabs, green turtle and various crustaceans are part of the what you will see.
Inland the fauna is also abundant: howler monkeys, raccoon, white-nosed coati, a vast variety of birds, etc, inhabit the park. This area has maintained its natural charm. If you love nature, this is one place you will enjoy. - Category: National Parks
- How to get there ?
- In San José take highway #32 to Limón. This highway starts on the north part of San José city at Barrio Amón. It is a 3 hour drive to Port Limón. From Limón it is less than an hour to Cahuita. Follow the signs to Cahuita and Sixaola. Soon after you leave Limon city, you will be driving by the coast enjoying the Caribbean atmosphere (hot and humid). About 35 miles past Limon you will see the sign to Cahuita National Park. This exit takes you through the very Jamaican style town of Cahuita where you can find many places to stay and taste the delicious Caribbean dishes.
Also you can go to Cahuita by direct bus service taken at the Caribeños Bus Station in Barrio Amon, San Jose. - When to go?
- The best time to visit this area are the months of March-April and September-October. Although you can go any time, hurricanes in the Caribbean may affect the area and sometimes cause flooding.
