Carara National Park

Carara is the Indian name for crocodile. This National Park protects the environment for secondary rainforest, lakes and waterfalls in the Tarcoles river region. It is also known as a paradise for birdwatchers - including one of the largest remaining wild populations of Scarlet Macaws in Costa Rica. There are several trails through and around the park. The main park trails near the ranger station are far away from the river and contain great anteaters, ocelots, spider monkeys, poison-dart frogs and other interesting insects and wildlife. One trail about 100 meters down the main highway from the ranger station meanders past wetland areas where crocodiles sometimes visit. We recommend you take only guided tours along this trail.

Get ready to see one of the most diverse collections of trees in the world. Some of the rarest hardwoods in the country can be seen in Carara. Along with your binoculars and camera be sure to take bug repellant and sun block!
