Irazu Volcano is actually "Thunder and Earthquake Mountain". This is the meaning of the name "Irazu", which originally came from the Indian name Istarú. It is also known as "Colossus" due to the catastrophes it has caused in the past. However, none of these names should stop you from visiting Irazu Volcano, Costa Rica’s highest volcano.Click on [+info] for more information
Irazu Volcano is located in a National Park of approximately 6000 acres. The summit is at 11,260’ above see level, is is in fact the highest volcano in Costa Rica. There are several craters around the summit. The main crater has a diameter of 3,445 ft. and a depth of 984 ft. In the crater is a green lake of variable depth. You can get all the way to the edge of this crater and look down inside. To the east is crater Diego de la Haya and to the south is Playa Hermosa, a flat area created by previous eruptions.
On a clear day it is possible to see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Your visit to Irazu Volcano will be rewarded with an awesome view from high on the mountain. If you love rolling hills and beautiful farmland, you will love this drive. There are many quaint little coffee shops with amazing Valley views along the way. After viewing the volcano, why not stop for a "cafe con leche" and take in the amazing views of the valley.
Irazu Volcano is located in Cartago, a province 15 miles south of San Jose. Take highway #2 to Cartago and follow the signs to Irazu Volcano. Soon you will be driving uphill for a good while, about one hour from Cartago. This is a winding road, but the views of the whole Central Valley and beautiful green fields make the drive a wonderful experience. There is also a public bus service from Cartago to Irazu but check the schedule - not a good idea to take the last bus up and not have a way back down the mountain
