At the bottom of what appears to be a lunar landscape is a simmering lake that changes colors depending on the mountain’s chemistry du jour. One more crater known as Botos lagoon is a beautiful cold green water lake with a diameter of 1,200 feet. Well marked trails will take you for a half hour hike to this scenic attraction, a picture perfect lake surrounded by lush forest.
To get to Poas Volcano from the International Airport, go to the city of Alajuela. From there head north following the signs to Fraijanes, Poasito and Volcan Poás. . Please keep in mind for your own safety that, except for the main highways, most of these roads are winding, narrow and unfortunately a few are in bad condition. However, most of the drives are very scenic, which compensates for inconveniences.
The park is open every day from 8 a.m. to 4 pm. Entrance fee is US $7. The highlight of this trip is to see the main crater. However clouds cover the crater later in the morning, therefore plan on an early start. Usually you can see from the distance if the volcano is clear.
