Twenty two miles of dark sand and rough waters, favorite place for nesting of Hawksbill, Loggerheads and Leatherback turtles. The beach is part of the Tortuguero National Park.Click on [+info] for more information.
Strong Caribbean currents have provided this long, straight 22 mile expanse of beach which is a favored nesting ground for sea turtles. Hawksbill, loggerheads, and Pacific Green turtles nest from July through October. The Leatherback , the largest sea turtle species in the world, nests from February to July. The beach starts at the estuary of the Tortuguero River and goes all the way to the estuary of the Parisimina river. This beach is not recommended for swimming.
There are two ways to get to Tortuguero: From San José, take highway #32 towards Guápiles. Get off #32 in Guapiles and go to Cariari, Campo Dos an finally to Caño la Pavona. From here you take a public boat that will sail through the canals for one hour until you get to Tortoguero. A second way to go is through the Bay of Moin in Limon. Public and private boasts launch from there going through the navigable canals to Tortuguero every day in the morning. The trip takes from 4 to 8 hours
