Costa Rica is the place for birdwatching. The diversity and the beauty of the bird species in Costa Rica attract birders from all around the globe. And with 812 different species in six ornithological zones, it’s no wonder. Such incredible diversity is due to the extreme ranges in elevation, from 0m to 3,820m above sea level, as well as Costa Rica`s close proximity to the equator. And housing all of these aviary beauties within a relatively small country, only 51,100 km², means that you can see most of them in one trip, if you plan carefully.
In order to get the most out of your birdwatching trip to Costa Rica, you need a good plan. Now there are many birding tour companies in Costa Rica that will actually plan your trip for you. All you need to do is to inform them of which species you want to see the most and how much time in which you have to see them. These tour companies will then cater a birdwatching itinerary that best suits your needs. They will plan everything from meals to transportation. Of course, as you may suspect, this can be a bit pricey. A two week tour will run you around four or five thousand dollars. However, if you plan on coming in a large group, you can usually get a significantly better rate. Although, this type of tour simply may not be within your budget or your schedule. But don’t worry, with the proper knowledge, planning your own birdwatching trip can be a breeze.
Whether or not you’re planning your own trip or having someone else plan it for you, it is important to know the basics of birding in Costa Rica. Of course, the first thing to be mindful of is the time of year that you are visiting. Many of the bird species are migratory birds and can only be seen during certain times of the year. Although the time of year may vary depending on the species, most migratory birds are found in Costa Rica during October and November, towards the end of the wet season.
The next factor to sort out is, of course, location. Where do I go to find all of these gorgeous tropical birds? Well, Costa Rican bird enthusiasts generally break the country down into four different regions: the Caribbean lowlands, the North Pacific lowlands, the South Pacific lowlands, and the mountains.
The Caribbean lowlands are made up of the wettest regions in Costa Rica. Stretching along the Caribbean coastline, they are home to species such as the Rufous Motmot, the Black-cheeked Woodpecker, the Purple-throated Fruitcrow, the White Fronted Nunbird, the Long-tailed Tyrant, the White-ringed Flycatcher, the Snowy Cotinga, the Black-faced Grosbeak, the Olive-backed Euphonia and the Emerald Tanager. Within the Caribbean lowlands there are many different sites for birdwatching. Among the most popular are the Caño Negro RAMSAR site Wildlife Refuge, the Arenal Volcano National Park area, the Sarapiqui area, the Barra Colorado National Parks in Tortuguero, the Braulio Carrillo National Park and the South Caribbean Talamanca Mountain Range.
The North Pacific lowlands, mainly located in Guanacaste, are the dry forest areas of the country. Some birds specific to these forests include the Plain Chachalaca, the White-fronted Parrot, the Yellow-naped Parrot, the Black-headed Trogon, the Rose-throated Becard, the White-lored Gnatcatcher, the Mangrove Vireo, the Scrub Euphonia, the Striped-headed Sparrow and the Cinnamon Hummingbird. The best places to see these birds include the Curu Wildlife Refuge, the Palo Verde Nacional Park, the Santa Rosa Nacional Park, the Diria National Forest, the Colorado – Abangares coastline, the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano area, and the Tenorio – Miravalles Volcanoes area.
The South Pacific lowlands have a diverse climate and therefore diverse avifauna. Located along the South Pacific coastline, these lowlands house many unique bird species like the Marbled-wood, the Band-rumped Swift, the White-tailed Emerald, the Bairds Trogon Black-cheeked Ant Tanager, the Charming Hummingbird, the Quail Golden-napped Woodpecker, the Spotted-crowned Euphonia, the Streaked Saltator and the Fiery-billed Aracari. Some great places to look for these rare birds are the Tarcoles River area, the Carara National Park, the Los Cusingos Private Reserve, the Palmar Norte area, the Corcovado National Park and the Peñas Blancas National Park.
The mountains of Costa Rica marble the inland area of the country. Nestled within these mountains are the majestic cloud forests of Costa Rica. These high-altitude forests are home to birds such as the Orange-bellied Trogon, the Emerald Tucanet, the Fiery-throated Hummingbird, the Coppery-headed Emerald, the Azzure-hooded Jay, the Red-headed Barbet, the Silvery-throated Tanager, the Mountain Robin, the Chiriqui Quail Dove, the Sulphur-winged Parakeet, the Ruddy Pigeon, the Green Hermit, the Slaty-backed Nightingale Trush and, perhaps the most sought after species of them all, the elusive Resplendent Quetzal. Among the most popular spots to look for these birds are the Monteverde-Santa Elena Private Reserve, the Tapanti National Park, the Los Santos Protected Area, the Corcovado National Park, the San Ramon Protected Area, the Braulio Carrillo National Park, the San Vito Protected Forest and the Poas Volcano National Park.
With all of these magnificent birds and so many amazing locations, your biggest concern is not having enough time to see them all. Although you may be a great outdoorsman, eager to explore on your own, hiring a local Costa Rica birdwatching guide is the best thing you can do for yourself. Not only will a guide help you find your way safely in this foreign territory, but he or she will also know the best spots to look for the birds you’re after and thereby save you a great deal of time looking. And with so much to do and so much to see, time is your most precious commodity.
