San Jose province is dominated by Costa Rica's capital city:  San Jose. Within the San Jose province there are still a number of things to do for nature lovers.  For example: Braulio Carrillo National Park starts just 23km (14 mi.) north of San Jose.  Five kinds of forest blanket its peaks in a lush green carpet dotted with orchids.  Hike the trails to the lookouts.  You may be fortunate enough to see the elusive jaguar, ocelot or the Baird tapir.

Chirripo National Park protects the terrain surrounding Cerro Chirripo, Central America's highest peak (3819 meters).  Not many tourists visit Chirripo, so if you are looking for a place that is a bit off the beaten path, include Chirripo in your vacation plans.  To get to the top is a long days hike (about 8 hours).  You begin at San Gerardo de Rivas early in the morning and hike along well-marked trails.  Keep an eye open for the beautiful Quetzal.  Once you reach the top and enjoy incredible views of the Pacific and Caribbean, you spend the night in rustic camping huts before heading down again early in the morning.  This hike is only for those who are in good health and top physical condition.
